People tend to look down when they’re feeling down or despondent. Shamed people hang their heads, looking towards their feet. I think that people often look upwards for hope and inspiration. The sky has served as inspiration for a seemingly endless amount of poetry, and has guided many a lost sailor safely back to shore. The nighttime sky in particular has been a wonder and inspiration for every culture since the dawn of man. Stars bring hope. ‘Only when it is dark enough, can you see the stars.’

Without a wish, without a will,
I stood upon that silent hill
And stared into the sky until
My eyes were blind with stars and still
I stared into the sky.

Ralph Hodgson (1871 – 1962) English poet

I came across this time-lapse video of the Northern Lights, which I think makes it pretty clear why people can be so inspired by the nighttime sky.
